APRIL ENDORSEMENTS: SENATE DISTRICT AND CENTRAL COMMITTEE

Our first order of business was to vote for our endorsements for Senate District 9 and the Contra Costa County Democratic Party Central Committee (CCCDPCC).  Our treasurer, Greg Lyman, took advantage of the large number of members who came to vote to verify as many phone numbers, snail and email addresses as possible. Each member receiving a ballot initialed the membership list to assure that only fully eligible members received ballots.

Nancy Skinner and Gabriel Quinto were the only two candidates to receive over 60% of the votes; they received our endorsement for Senate District 9 and CCCDPCC respectively.  

Full results were as follows:

Come Celebrate Loving Day, El Cerrito Style!

Sunday June 12, 2016 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
City Hall Civic Plaza, Manila Avenue

Let’s celebrate Loving Day on June 12th at El Cerrito City Hall.  Loving Day in El Cerrito is a celebration of racial equality, marriage equality and human equality.  

Loving Day was started by a graduate student named Ken Tanabe.  He had been studying the Supreme Court Case of Mildred and Richard Loving.  Richard Loving was a Caucasian man and Mildred was an African American woman.  Their marriage was illegal in Virginia and they were forced to leave their home after being arrested.  The Lovings and their children relocated to Washington DC where they took their case to the Supreme Court and won, unanimously.

Loving Day has become a celebration of multiculturalism and is an opportunity to learn from the past while coming together to create a future of tolerance and understanding through dialogue and education.  It is also noteworthy that it was the Loving case that was used as precedent to legalize Gay Marriage.

Join us on June 12th for this family friendly event! We will have music, crafts, photo booth fun, a reading corner, chalk art, food trucks and more!

A PERSONAL LETTER FROM CONG. MARK DESAULNIER

 

Dear Friend,

As many of you may have heard, last summer I was diagnosed with a cancer called Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).  I feel fortunate for my positive response to treatment, and I now join the approximately 1.2 million Americans living long, full lives despite managing blood cancer. 

At the time I received my diagnosis, I was told CLL would not impact my work.  I am proud that during treatment, I held 14 town halls, met with thousand of constituents, flew over 170,000 miles and maintained a 99.1% voting record.

I am sharing my story to add to the chorus of people fighting to overcome cancer.  It is for this reason that I reached out to our local newspaper and spoke with Dan Borenstein.  I was touched that Dan also shared his personal experience in the East Bay Times for May 5.

Since the story ran, the outpouring of support has been humbling, and I am extremely grateful for all the expressions of encouragement. My goal is to do everything possible to fund cancer research, improve doctor patient communication, and ensure life saving cancer drugs are available to all who need them.
