Draft Resolution on “More Usable” Nuclear Weapons

WHEREAS,  Along with the climate crisis, nuclear war with its concomitant nuclear winter poses the threat of human extinction.

WHEREAS,  HR 6840, a bicameral Hold the LYNE (Low Yield Nuclear Explosive) Act has been introduced by Representatives   A. Smith,  T. Leiu,  J. Garamendi and E. Blumenauer plus Senator E. Markey to prohibit any funds from being used for the research, development, production or deployment of such a new warhead.

WHEREAS,  In 1982, the citizens of California passed the Nuclear Freeze
(proposition 12) and in 2012, along with other cities, the West Contra Costa County city councils of Richmond, El Cerrito and San Pablo passed New Priority resolutions calling for redistributing military spending to address social and environmental needs.

BE IT RESOLVED, that the El Cerrito Democratic Club endorses  HR  6840.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be sent to our Congressional representatives, the California Council of Democratic Clubs and any California Democratic Party body capable of taking any similar action.

Draft Resolution on Carbon Pricing

WHEREAS,  The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns us of the urgency for addressing the climate crisis.

WHEREAS,  HR 7173, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, provides for charging fossil fuel companies a fee and passes the revenue on to households as a dividend to compensate for any price increase and is thus a progressive tax.

WHEREAS,  Cap and Trade is an example of climate injustice policy.

BE IT RESOLVED, that the El Cerrito Democratic Club endorses  HR 7173.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be sent to our Congressional representatives, the California Council of Democratic Clubs and any California Democratic Party body capable of taking similar action.

Recap of December 11, 2018 ECDC Club Meeting

The El Cerrito Democratic Club met at Janet Abelson’s house at 7 Pomona Avenue in El Cerrito for a brief business meeting at 8 PM.

  1. Those members present at the meeting included the following: Don Queen, Cheryl Sudduth, Kathy Fleming, Rochelle Pardue Okimoto, Al Miller, Greg Lyman, Gloria Merrill, Ruby MacDonald, Bob MacDonald, Hari Lamba, Janet Abelson, Harpreet Sandhu, Pat Durham and Dwight Merrill.
  2. It was moved by Sudduth and seconded by Dwight Merrill that Rochelle Pardue Okimoto be appointed to be ECDC representative to the DPCCC. The motion passed unanimously. The alternate position was up in the air; neither candidate was present.
    Champagne was nominated and if she can serve she may; otherwise the club will find someone else.
  3. It was announced that the 15th Assembly District caucus elections will be held in mid-January. Champagne Brown, Hari Lamba, Joey Smith and Harpreet Sandhu are running. It was moved by Lamba and seconded by Miller that they be endorsed. The motion passed unanimously.
  4. The meeting was adjourned by club president Janet Abelson at 8:24 PM.
